Grad School Orientation

this is me saying good bye to malik and danny and off to the 1st day orientation...

My first class orientation for school was today. We all met at the Clas Ropes in Provo. Of all these years I have lived in Provo, I had no idea that this place was just down the road on Center Street. I got there just in time and most of our class was already there. I looked around to see if I could see any familiar faces but there was none. I quickly made my way to the table and signed in. A lady that stood next me started talking to me which was so nice of her because it made me feel less nervous. We started the evening with the introduction to the Program by one of our professors, Dr. Jeff Thompson. Then we received our team assignment and I was surprised that the lady (Julie) that I had already met was in my team. My team members are Julie, Russ, Steve, Scott, and myself. We all live here in Utah County. Julie works as the manager for the BYU history department, Russ works as the assistant director for the BYU indepentent study, steve works as a director for a ASL organization, and Scott works for the Provo city. Right after dinner we broke up into our teams and started with different team activites. I was able to climb half way up the rock wall, did this thing where you walk on a thin metal from one tree to another and jumped down, and the most scariest thing I did was the "ring jump" or they call it "leap of faith." The climbing was a piece of cake but as soon as I got up there and looked down and realized I was 25 feet high up in the air I asked the worker if I could climb back down. He quickly told me no that the the only way down was to jump. After about 20 minutes of almost crying I closed my eyes said a little prayer that I would be able to see my baby Malik and Danny again I jumped and tried to reach out for the ring. It was the most scaries thing I had ever done. I came home that night and told Danny that I felt like a loser in front of all my class mates and teachers. Danny assured me that we would go back and try it again.

The evening was a success because I was able to get to know my team mates and teachers. I am excited for school and what's ahead of me for the next 3 years.
The next day (Aug 28th), everyone in our program met up for dinner and more orientation. It was a professional evening. Everyone had to wear professional attires and we took our class picture as well as individual. The dean of our program welcomed us to the program and introduced all our teachers for the next 3 years. Danny and Malik waited outside in the parking lot the whole 4 hours until I was done and we all drove home. I am grateful that Danny and Malik are behind me and my school and I hope I will be able to stick it out till the end.

Congratulations Vika! I know you can stick it out for the next 3 years! Let me know if you ever need a babysitter. I know from personal experience that that's the hardest part of finishing school--having a child at home! :)

I'm so glad you made it through the ropes course! There are always a few EMPA students who won't even try, so don't worry about being scared. I'm sure they were all impressed at how you convinced yourself to do something new. And that you could climb all the way up the wall!
